The vintage
A highly eventful 2017 vintage. After a wet winter and early budbreak, severe frost on April 19/20 caused significant losses, especially in Riquewihr. Flowering began on May 31 under favourable conditions, followed by a healthy summer with little disease pressure. Harvest started early in September and was briefly disrupted by limited hail on September 17. Despite the challenges, the vintage produced wines of very high quality.
In the vineyard
Sourced exclusively from the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru overlooking Riquewihr, the historic cradle of the family’s finest Rieslings, this wine comes from 40–60-year-old vines rooted in Keuper marl with gypsum and dolomite, which provide structure and saline minerality. Cultivated for over twenty years without herbicides or insecticides, the soils are worked mechanically to encourage biodiversity and natural balance. Fully certified organic since 2025, the estate reflects a long-term commitment to precise and respectful viticulture.
Winemaking
Presses are gravity-fed, with no pumping or mechanical handling. After several hours of static settling, the musts are transferred to large oak casks or tanks, where fermentation occurs at a controlled 18°C. A single racking before winter allows the wine to clarify naturally without artificial cold stabilization. Light filtration is applied before spring bottling, followed by bottle ageing in our cellars until release.

Advice
Tasting
The youthful robe hints at a wine that will not feel its age. The aromas immediately indicate the character of a remarkable, complete and mature region. The years of ageing have left their mark; this is an open, broad and profound wine. This Schoenenbourg is dashing, musky, smoky with the hints of fresh almond and fresh nuts, so typical to it which combine with the kind of patina and butteryness that would have you believe it had been aged in wooden casks. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is just a clear sign that the wine is perfect and that the grapes were harvested when fully ripe. The broad, flavoursome and intensely saline taste is full-bodied and lively, its energetic acidity is clear without any unwanted sweetness. This wine is powerful with a lot of character and volume, the final note is long and mouth-watering, it oozes serenity.
